Facial Slimming with Botox® at Leamington Facial Aesthetics

While Botox®(Botulinum Toxin Type A) is more commonly known as an anti-wrinkle treatment to reduce the signs of ageing, it also has many other clinical uses, both cosmetic and functional.

Its ability to prevent headaches is well known to the more experienced practitioners, as are the techniques we can use to reduce excessive sweating. However, here you can find out about how Botox can be injected into the masseter muscles to narrow the jaw and in turn, slim the face with the V-line Procedure, also known as Masseter Muscle Reduction or Jaw Tapering.

Jaw Reduction with Botox (The V-line Procedure)

Jaw Reduction, also known as the v-line procedure or jaw-line tapering is a procedure I've performed for many clients over the years with excellent results.

Injecting Botox to relax the masseter muscles is generally performed for one of two indications - firstly it can reduce teeth grinding, and secondly it can reduce the size of the muscles themselves, effectively narrowing and lifting the jaw line, which in turn helps slim the lower third of the face towards a more feminine V shape - thus the name "The V-Line Procedure".

So how does Botox work to slim the face?

Sometimes a client may feel the width of the lower third of their face or angle of their jaw is a little too square or wide, this may be down to genetic makeup and bone structure, or enlargement of the masseter muscles that can occur over time due to excess chewing or teeth grinding. In both cases, injecting the muscles in the jaw with Botox will ease tension, reduce their size, and effectively provide more definition to the jaw line and a slimmer appearance to the lower third of the face.

In recent years this procedure has become an especially popular request from my Asian clients.

Botox for Jaw Clenching & Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

In addition to slimming the face, because the result of injecting Botox into the masseter muscles eases tension in the jaw, it also helps reduce teeth grinding (Bruxism), and is in fact a procedure often recommended by dentists who may be concerned about a patient's excessive jaw clenching, an issue which can prematurely wear down tooth enamel and cause extensive damage to teeth. I have treated many clients for this purpose too, so if you do require a treatment for Bruxism, do let me know.

How safe is Botox for jaw shaping & are the injections painful?

"While injecting Botox to slim the jaw is a very safe and only mildly uncomfortable procedure, as with all injectable treatments at my Leamington Spa clinic, I take pain relief very seriously and use the best anaesthetic creams available, applying topically as required prior to injecting."

Does injecting Botox into the jaw muscles affect my ability to eat?

"Clients often ask if masseter muscle injections will affect their ability to eat. I can safely say that having performed the procedure for a large number of clients over the years the answer is no; so long as the injections are performed properly with the correct amount of Botox your ability to chew and eat normally will generally not be affected."

"Occasionally some people notice their jaw may tire a little faster than normal in the initial period as the Botox begins to take effect (3 to 7 days after treatment), however, this is nothing to worry about and only becomes apparent in circumstances such as when chewing gum or eating certain types of food that require extensive chewing, such as a large steak. If this does affect you, be assured that any discomfort you may experience will lessen within a week or two of treatment."

How long does the facial slimming effect of Botox last?
"There are many factors that can affect how long it takes for the effect to wear off. Everyone is different, but after the initial treatment you will likely notice the jaw muscles begin to regain size within 3 to 6 months, at which point you'll know it's time to return for a top up. However, the duration of the effect often lengthens with each treatment - so less frequent injections may be required in future. This is something I will discuss with you upon consultation." - Rosie
